Effective Effort

What if all students believed effort could enhance their capability to learn?  Click below to visit a site created by the Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin and Agile Mind, Inc.

Learning and the Adolescent Mind

Effective Effort: Working hard and using learning strategies deliberately to “get smarter” at important knowledge and skills. Working hard or “hard work” requires six things:

1. Time—An understanding of how much time it takes to do the job well

2. Focus—No texting or other distractions; concentrate only on the work!

3. Strategies or Persistence---If one approach isn’t working, keep trying different ways until you find one that works.

4. Resourcefulness---Knowing where to go and whom to ask for help when you’re really stuck.

5. Use of Feedback---Looking carefully at responses to your work so you know exactly what to fix.

6. Commitment---Being determined to finish and do the very best work. Learning strategies: the knowledge and skills you use to complete tasks successfully and “get smart”
